The State Of The Balconi Address

How Messages Change Priorities

Man, I am borderline broke. Between paying for rehab, fixing my car, and trying to promote my book, I am really running low on funds. I guess I can't take a vacation this year. Too bad though. I was really looking forward to spending the weekend of my birthday up at one of the ski resorts. My birthday is during the summer, so the rates up there are cheap, even for a four star resort. There's great restaurants, beautiful scenery, clean mountain air, all the things any person needs to feel reinvigorated. Oh well, maybe next year.

Person speaking above receives a message via Facebook.

Oh, it's a message about my high school reunion.

Opens the message.

Wow. My high school reunion is scheduled for the weekend of my birthday. There's going to be a family friendly picnic, a service project, and a general party with all the people I knew in high school to be held at the high school I graduated from.

Person thinks for a second.

You know, I really need to take a vacation. If not for my sanity, to inject some money back into our dire economy.

The 2011 State Of The Union Address

The 2011 Utah State Of The State Address

For some time, I have wondered what it would take for a politician in Utah to get national attention. I thought that Chris Buttar's yearly reaffirming of his empty headed bigotry would get attention by now. I thought Sheldon Kilpack's DUI arrest and subsequent defense of his DWI arrest, a defense that may have some merit, would have gotten national attention. I thought that Kevin Garn admitting to a nude hottub encounter on a floor of the Utah State Legislature, a nude hottub encounter when he was twenty-eight and the girl was sixteen, would have gotten national attention. I thought Kevin Garn receiving a standing ovation from his fellow legislatures after admitting to his nude hottub encounter would have received national attention. But nothing. Nothing. Seemingly nothing that happens in the state of Utah can even come close to superseding a golden throated homeless man. Perhaps this can change things. Perhaps what Gov. Gary Herbert said during his 2011 State Of The State address will finally get national attention. I mean, what this address amounts to is a twenty-seven minute long rant about state's rights, rights that the federal government is NOT encroaching on. I have my doubts that this will happen though. I just know that Gov. Herbert's address will be overshadowed by the east coast receiving an amount of snow that amounts to a dusting out here. Either that or Curtis Oda's ferrel animals proposal, or the proposal to appoint a state gun. Ugh.

The Naming Of The Device

A group of people gather around a long table in a conference room in a high rise office building somewhere in America. There are many different kinds of people, all of them dressed in well tailored suits. The man at the end of the table, Derrick Balconi, stands to address the gathered.

Derrick Balconi- Ladies, gentlemen, and people from management-

The people gathered laugh at that joke.

Derrick Balconi- we have come here because another company has asked for our help again. Last year, Microsoft wanted a name for their motion gaming deceive, and we delivered. The name Kinect is now in the lips of every video game aficionado and has become a worldwide phenomena. Now another company has come to us looking for a name. That company is Microsoft's direct competitor in the video game market, Sony.

The people gathered gasp and start to murmur like people do when a monumental thing is said.

Derrick Balconi- People, we need to deliver a name that is catchy, non-offensive, and, most importantly, not currently trademarked. I think we need to consult the bag.

The people gathered murmur again.

Derrick Balconi- Delany, bring in the bag.

A woman, also dressed in a well tailored suit, enters the conference room carrying a velvet bag. The other people in the room look at Delany with much adoration and envy. Delany places the bag in front of Derrick, then leaves the room.

Derrick Balconi- Thank you Delany. My employees, this is where we will get the name for Sony's newest consumer device, but first we need to know how long this name should be. Delany, the die.

Delany reenters the conference room carrying a large twenty sided die. The other people in the room look at Delany with much adoration and envy. Delany places the die in Derrick's hand, then leaves the room.

Derrick Balconi- Thank you Delany.

Derrick rolls the die out on the conference table. It comes to a rest in front of one of the people at the table. Derrick dramatically points that this employee and says-

Derrick Balconi- You! What does the die say?

The employee looks at the die and says-

Employee- Three.
Derrick Balconi- Good, I like three. I hear it's a magic number. Now, to decide the name.

Derrick opens the velvet bag Delany placed in front of him. He digs around in this bag and pulls out three tiles. Tiles that look very much like this.

Derrick places the tiles on the table. Derrick looks at the tiles and says-

Derrick Balconi- Behold! The name that we have come up with for Sony's new consumer device. NPG.

The employee who spoke earlier speaks again.

Employee- But sir, what does that mean?
Derrick Balconi- That is not our concern. We do not attach meanings to things, we only name them. Meaning are for the client to decide.

The people in the conference room disperse, satisfied that they had just done what they have been gathered there to do.

Salt Lake City, Utah

Hunter Red is sitting in his office listening to his iPod. There's a TV on in his office tuned to CNN. They are covering the riots in Cairo, Egypt. Hunter looks at the TV, without taking off his iPod, and says-

Hunter- Huh. Looks like somebody won something. Probably soccer since it's not America.

George W. Bush is sitting in his office at his ranch in Crawford, Texas. There's a TV in his office tuned to CNN. They are covering the riots in Cairo, Egypt. George looks at the TV and says-

W- You're welcome.

Handynerd Corner: 1

When I was a kid, cellphones were used to make calls. I know, weird huh? Today, cellphones can play games, run apps, update the Twitbook, and, on occasion, make phone calls. Now with the iPhone 4, you can't even make calls! They say it's an antenna problem, but come on. How can they call it an "iPhone" if it can't make phone calls! So this week, on Handynerd Corner, I'm going to show you how to fix your iPhone's antenna problem.

Now, I could just wrap the whole thing in the handynerd's secret weapon, duct tape, but that would be too easy of a solution. I mean if that solution could work, someone would have come up with it already. Now, Apple tells you the solution is to buy a bumper from them, but you know what, NO! I'm not giving you more money to fix a problem that you caused and you should fix anyway! Besides, all this bumper is just a circular piece is rubber that goes around the outside of the iPhone, and I know where to get a circular piece of rubber. My wallet.

This, nerds and lurkers, is a "condom". A condom is a latex, polyurethane, or lambskin device used to prevent the sharing of various fluids when engaging in sexual intercourse. Intercourse is that thing you spend hours watching people do online. Now, all I have to do is roll out the condom, remove the phallic shaped portion, and place the outside ring of the condom on the outside of the iPhone 4. Now to take the condom out of the package.

Hunter tears open the condom package, looks inside, then pours out a pile of dust from the package.

Okay, looks like I need to get my own condom, since the one my Dad gave me seems to have expired several years ago. So, we're going to go on with the show, while I go to the place where condoms are sold. I think I'm going to have to Google "Where can I buy condoms?" to find out where to buy them.

Handynerd Corner: 2

Okay, so I went down to one of the 2874 gas stations I have within a five minute drive of me and picked up a pack of condoms, as well as some Funyuns and a bottle of Coke.

Hunter takes the condom out of the package and finds that there's actually a condom in there.

Okay, now to just remove the phallic portion of the condom from the ring.

Hunter has removed all but the outside ring from the condom.

Now, I'm just going to slip the condom on the iPhone.

Hunter tries to put the condom on the iPhone and fails.

Okay, now to just-

Hunter tries again, gets the condom on one corner and fails.

Okay, now-

Hunter gets the condom on three corners of the iPhone then fails.

Okay, this appears to be harder then it appears. Maybe I need to find something bigger.

Hunter thinks for a second.

I could get those jumbo condoms, but no one would actually believe I can fill one of those. Wait! I'll be back

Bobby And Chris

Bobby Kotick is sitting in his office at the headquarters of The Great Empire Of Activision. He's sitting behind his desk, thinking.

Bobby- We implemented this Real ID system, which displays the real names of our users in our games, and now people are complaining about it. They're saying it could lead to widespread abuses, stalking, and vigilantism. How can we silence these people?

Bobby's face lights up as he's just had an idea. He picks up the phone on his desk and dials.

Bobby- Hello Patricia?

Patricia- Yes Bobby?

Bobby- You know that list we have of the people who have complained about out Real ID system?

Patricia- Yeah.

Bobby- Is there a way we could "accidentally" release that list to the public?

There is a short pause.

Patricia- Why would we do that?

An evil look comes over Bobby Kotick's face.

Bobby- To silence those who oppose us.

There is a short pause.

Patricia- Okay, I'll get right on that.

Bobby- Thanks.

Bobby looks at the camera and maintains the evil look on his face through the fade.

Chris Buttars is sitting in his office at his office at his home in West Jordan, Utah. He's sitting behind his desk thinking.

Chris- We're currently crafting a law that would closely resemble the Immigration Law that was just passed in Arizona, and now people are complaining about it. They're saying it could lead to widespread abuses, stalking, and vigilantism. How can we silence these people?

Chris's face lights up as he's just had an idea. He picks up the phone on his desk and dials.

Chris- Hello Stephen?

Stephen- Yes Chris?

Chris- You know that list the state of Utah has of all the known illegal immigrants that live in the state?

Stephen- Yeah.

Chris- Is there a way we could "accidentally" release that list to the public?

There is a short pause.

Stephen- Why would we do that?

An evil look comes over Chris's face.

Chris- To silence those who oppose us.

There is a short pause.

Stephen- Okay, I'll get right on that.

Chris- Thanks.

Chris looks at the camera and maintains the evil look on his face through the fade.

Handynerd Corner: 3

So, I just got back from the doctors office, where I let a man shove his hand up my ass, and this time not recreationally. I did this for two reasons. One: I'm getting older, and as men get older they need to have a man shove his hand up their ass for a reason that escapes me. Two: I needed to steal some latex gloves, and what better way to steal latex gloves than to spend three hours in a waiting room, pay a $50 co-pay, then have an older man violate you. Okay, now I have to separate the hand portion of this glove from the ring portion, which is something I wish the doctor had done before he performed his "exam".

So, I've removed the ring portion of the glove from the hand portion, and now to slip the ring portion over the outside of the iPhone.

Hunter tries to put the ring on the iPhone and fails.

Wait, let's try this again.

Hunter tries to put the ring on the iPhone, get the ring on three corners of the iPhone and fails. Hunter then throws the ring away.

Okay, so apparently this isn't going to work. What else can I do?

Hunter thinks for a second.

I guess I could try the handynerd's secret weapon, duct tape, like I do with ever other project I do, but that is such a basic solution, someone else would have come up with it before me.

Hunter appears on screen with an iPhone covered from top to bottom with duct tape.

So apparently covering the whole damn thing with duct tape does work to solve the antenna problem, and makes for a relatively inexpensive case. Well, that's it for the Handynerd portion of the show, and remember: If a woman is repulsed by your nerdiness, she can at least find you handy. Now to test it out.

Hunter places a phone call.

Hello? Yes, it's me. I'm testing out my iPhone fix. Okay, later.

Hunter hangs up the phone.

Red Is Annoyingly Blissful

THE NEW KORN CD IS OUT! I'M NEARLY BURSTING WITH HOW HAPPY I AM! WAIT, OH SHIT!

Red explodes.

Also, The Black Robin Christmas Carol, November 1st, assuming we can gather all the pieces of Hunter Red back together.

Buttars Must Go!

There's about forty-five days a year that I seriously think about leaving the state of Utah, those are the forty-five days that the Utah State Legislature is in session. The politicians who claim to represent the people of Utah are an utter embarrassment and represent the worst of this state. The man pictured above is the worst of these politicians. Utah State Senator Chris Buttars

Buttars: Gays 'greatest threat to America'

I've written blog posts against Chris Buttars in the past, and I feel if he is not removed from office that I will do so again and again. If Chris Buttars does not resign or is forced out of office, I promise to work within the system to remove this embarrassment once and for all. I will campaign for his opponent, no matter who it is. I will give my time, give my money, I just might even join the Utah Democratic Party if that is what it will take.

No longer can I tolerate the utter unapologetic hatred Chris Buttars spews on a daily basis. Chris Buttars must go!

Leopold Stoch Has Nothing To Do With This Guy

This week, Utah state Senator Chris Buttars proposed a non-binding piece of legislation that would compel retailers to say "Merry Christmas" as opposed to "Happy Holidays". This act caused Mr. Buttars to gain national notoriety, most notably on Countdown With Keith Olberman as the "Worst Person In The World".

This is not the first time Chris Buttars has made a comment that embarrassed himself and the people of Utah. Chris Buttars referred to a bill he did not like as a black baby "a dark ugly thing". Mr. Buttars also said that a judge who ruled against a major contributor of his was a activist judge. Finally Chris said that his opponent in an election was gay.

Now these comments alone would be enough to fill a career in politics, but the three comments I referenced are things Chris Buttars has said THIS YEAR! This very year!!! The black baby comment came in February, the activist judge comment was revealed in May, and the opponent is gay comment was revealed this November.

All of this begs one question. Not why Buttars make these comments, but why did the people of his district vote for him? What do they not read the news, not listen to the radio, or even not go outside? How do these people not know who this guy is and what this guy has said?!? HOW?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Save Me from My Senator
