Obvious Skyrim
Red Review- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Yes, I
know, I'm late to the party. Shut up.
Perhaps
it is the alleged writer in me, but I appreciate a good narrative. I appreciate a good, well written story that
unveils itself with a proper pace.
Narrative is something that most people is lacking in video games, but
there are games out there with a good story behind it.
In
Fallout 3, you play as a person on the search for their father. You go out into an unfamiliar environment,
encounter many various types of people, and battle seemingly insurmountable
odds to accomplish this goal. In the
end, the player finds his father and reconnects with him.... for about five
seconds before the person you spent the entirety of the game seeking leaves to
go accomplish something more important that the player. Granted that thing is providing people with
clean water, but still, that's not a good example of parenting.
Fallout:
New Vegas begins with the player being shot and left for dead in the middle of
the Mohave Desert. Throughout most of
the game, you seek to find out who left you for dead, and the role you and they
play in a massive conspiracy to do... something. Actually, I didn't finish Fallout: New Vegas
due to persistent bugs. Fallout: New
Vegas is an example of a game with a good narrative, but who's gameplay hinders
the experience of the game. If Fallout:
New Vegas hadn't been riddled with bugs, I'm sure the narrative that was being
constructed would have paid off in a spectacular fashion.
The Elder
Scrolls V: Skyrim is set in the kind of high fantasy setting that has nothing
to do with history, reality, or anything that actually happened. Such a setting provides ample opportunities
to tell many varied complex stories that have illusions to things that actually
happened. Just ask George
R.R.RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Martin.
What the
makers of Skyrim, Bethesda, did with this opportunity is truly
spectacular. Skyrim did nothing with
this opportunity. Nothing. Nothing.
A spectacular display of nothingness only before seen in Congress.
As near
as I can tell, there is no overarching story in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim,
or, at the very least, not one that I cared about. Sure the gameplay is flawless, but all that
does is allow me to without obstruction experience the vast supply of nothing in
front of me.
In the
game, you can pick up objects in the environment and carry it with you. If you pick up too many items, you can reach
a point where you are carrying more weight than you character can bear, forcing
you to walk very, very slowly. There
were many times in playing Skyrim where I was carrying too many objects. Rather than shed myself of low value or high
weight objects, I choose to walk very, very slowly. I did this for one reason: I needed to catch
up on episodes of The Rachel Maddow Show.
Making this
choice should have been a sign for me.
Rather than being eager to experience more of the narrative and the
world that Skyrim had to offer, I chose to play Skyrim passively while watching
videos on my iPad. I didn't make this
choice because the game I was playing was bad.
I made this choice because the game I was playing was not stimulating me
intellectually on any level. To me,
Skyrim wasn't an uncomfortable gaming experience, it was just boring.
While I
do have an appreciation for the world that Bethesda created with Skyrim, I
wanted a compelling reason to continue adventuring in this world. In my playing of Skyrim, that reason was
never presented to me. Perhaps others
see value in walking through a world with nothing to do but kill endless
supplies of skeletons, but I don't. I
want a reason to kill an endless supply of skeletons, other than they are
trying to kill me. I want a story. I want a purpose. I want some there there.

The Third Annual The Four Star Gaming Awards
Hunter Red is sitting in his office at The Redertainment Corporation Of America.
Hunter- Well, nominations for The Four Star Gaming Awards have been open for about a month now, let's see who's submitted.
Hunter Red checks his email.
Hunter- Huh. No one. No one has submitted their nominations for this years The Four Star Gaming Awards. Huh. So, I guess this year's awards will reflect only my feelings about the best video games of the year. Then again, some would argue that's always been the case. Okay, let's get this started.
The Third Annual The Four Star Gaming Awards
Wii Game of the Year-
Nominees- Epic Mickey, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Metroid: Other M, NBA Jam, Super Mario Galaxy 2
Of all the games released for the Wii this year, two games in particular stood out. These were games that brought classic, iconic characters to new audiences in ways that no one had imagined. These games revolutionized these characters, updated them for the modern day, and, most importantly, brought a whole new level of fun to the gaming public. To say that one game was better than the other is simply disingenuous. Both of these games are award caliber efforts. That is why, the winner of The Four Star Gaming Award for Wii Game of the Year is

Epic Mickey and Kirby's Epic Yarn
Xbox 360 Game of the Year-
Nominees- Battlefield Bad Company 2, Bioshock 2, Fable 3, Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption
In recent years, we've seen a resurgence in the western genre. Movies like 3:10 To Yuma, No Country For Old Men, and True Grit, have brought good, serious, traditional western films back to the forefront. Rockstar Games is known for bringing a cinematic flair to their video games. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is reminiscent of Scarface, the upcoming LA Noir is reminiscent of the film noir of the Twenties and Thirties, and Red Dead Redemption reminds the connoisseur of television series like Gunsmoke, Maverick, and Deadwood. Red Dead Redemption is a game that gripped audiences from the first railcar scene to the final showdown. That is why The Four Star Gaming Award for Xbox 360 Game of the Year goes to

Red Dead Redemption
Playstation 3 Game of the Year-
Nominees- Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Final Fantasy XIII, God of War 3, Heavy Rain, RUSE
In a year where motion gaming was touted as the next big thing, a game came out that may actually signal where video games are going in the future. This is a game with no heads up displays, driven purely by contextual clues, and is a different experience for every gamer. Some people dismissed Heavy Rain as not really a game but more an interactive movie. This is a comment that can be made about a lot of games. So, to dismiss a great game Heavy Rain for that reason is simply ignorant. Besides, what other game gave us the internet meme "Press X To Jason".

The Four Star Gaming Award for Playstaion 3 Game of the Year is Heavy Rain
Downloadable Game of the Year-
Nominees- Dead Rising 2: Patient Zero, Death Spank, Limbo, Sonic 4, You Will Die
This year was really weak for downloadable games. There wasn't a game the caliber of Shadow Complex, 'Splosion Man, or Flower. Gaming online was more defined by games like Battlefield: Bad Company 2, the Blur Beta, and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. The best thing I can say about this year's winner of The Four Star Gaming Award for Downloadable Game of the Year is this: It's the kind of emo love story that would make Ian Curtis proud.

The Four Star Gaming Award for Downloadable Game of the Year is Limbo
Best Original IP of the Year-
Nominees- Alan Wake, Bayoneta, Blur, Epic Mickey, Heavy Rain, Limbo
This year was filled with sequels. Seven of the ten games nominated for The Four Star Gaming Awards Game of the Year are sequels. So, I felt it necessary to shine a light on a new game, a new property, a new thing in the realm of video games. The winner of this award not only represent a new intellectual property, it represents a new way to play survival horror games. The idea of attacking someone with light is something that is only seen as a threat to people who suffer from albinism or are made of water. However, the way that this game mechanic is pulled off in Alan Wake amazingly well. Alan Wake is a game that captivated audiences long after the blatant plugs for Energizer left their TV screens.

Gaming Disappointment of the Year-
Nominees- Fallout: New Vegas being mad buggy, Final Fantasy XIII being a B grade game instead of an A grade game, Gran Turismo 5 being delayed AGAIN (Chinese Democracy), Ubisoft E3 Press Conference
Fallout 3 was, for many people, a stunning breakout game of 2008. Upon announcement, Fallout: New Vegas was a hotly anticipated game. The gaming public was expecting somethings that, like Fallout 3, would blow them away. What they got was a game that blows. Fallout: New Vegas is a game so riddled with bugs it's now included in many entomological text books. Even the massive update, released slightly before Christmas, could not cover up the memory that is only reinforced by YouTube videos like this:

Non-Gaming Thing Most Deserving of an Award-
Nominees- Broken Bells- Broken Bells, Conan O'Brien, The Dead Weather- Sea Of Cowards, Elizabeth Edwards, Inception, Mad Men, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, The Walking Dead, Wikileaks
Danger Mouse came to prominence in 2004 when he released The Grey Album, which combined acapellas from Jay-Z's The Black Album with instrumentals from The Beatles' The White Album. While still dealing with the legal fallout from The Grey Album, Danger Mouse formed Gnarls Barkley with Cee-Lo Green and produced their albums St. Elsewhere and The Odd Couple. He produced the second Gorillaz album, 2005's Demon Days, as well as Beck's 2008 record, Modern Guilt. In 2009 he collaborated with James Mercer of the indie rock band The Shins to form Broken Bells. James Mercer's musical influences include The Smiths, The Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Beach Boys and The Jesus and Mary Chain. These influences are on full display on Broken Bell's self titled first album, released on March 9, 2010. This acclaimed but often overlooked album is the winner of The Four Star Gaming Awards Non-Gaming Thing Most Deserving of an Award.

Game of the Year-
Nominees- Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Epic Mickey, God of War 3, Heavy Rain, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Limbo, Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy 2
All of the games listed above have received acclaim, from gamers and critics alike, throughout the year. However, one must be chosen to be game of the year. Unlike the other awards, this is one that cannot be shared. There is one game that, upon it's release, stuck out in my mind as something truly special. This is a game that changed the way I thought storytelling can by conveyed in video games. This is a game that changed how I felt characters con be portrayed in video games. This is a game, the only game, that I played through in it's entirety twice. The Four Star Gaming Award for Game of the Year goes to

Heavy Rain
So, there you have it, the third annual The Four Star Gaming Awards. By the way, I added the extra "the" to sound arrogant. How will Heavy Rain figure into next week's Best of the Decade awards? Find out next week on The Four Stars Blog. Or don't. Whatever. You'll all probably care about as much about the Best of the Decade awards as you did about The Black Robin Christmas Carol, which sold all of one copy. Sigh.

The Brutal Slaughter Of A Joke
Red Review: Just Bieber- My World 2.0

Upon learning of his winning of the American Music Award for artist of the year, many people expressed their outrage at Justin Bieber. They said things like "WHAT THE FUCK!" "ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!!!" "HOW DARE THEY SNUB (Insert Artist Here)?!?!?" "THE AMA ARE SHIT!!!!!!!!!" I was one of these people. The comment I made was "Name me one Justin Bieber song that is good!" About a day after I made that comment I thought about it again, and I was honestly disgusted with myself. I had done what I slam many gaming critics for doing: I judged somethings without experiencing it myself. I had judged Just Bieber as bad based on the opinions of other people, not myself. So, I sought to change that. I bought Justin Bieber's 2010 release "My World 2.0". I didn't just listen to it once and did away with it, I listened to this CD, in it's entirety, four times. This is what I thought of it.

The first impression I got from this CD is that it sounded very feminine. This is an impression that was reinforced the further I got into the CD. I'm not referring to the vocal range that Justin Bieber utilizes, I'm referring to the content. Listen, if you will, to this:
Now listen to these:
Notice how smilier those songs sound? Notice how "That Should Be Me" sounds like it could have been sung by a woman? That is true of every track on My World 2.0. From "Somebody To Love" to "Never Let You Go" to "Up", each track Justin Biever sings seems written to be sung by a woman.

This isn't a bad thing. When I sing at karaoke, I only sing song performed by female vocalists. From "Gold Lion" by Yeah Yeah Yeah to "Come Into My World" by Kylie Minogue to "Your Love Is My Drug" by Ke$ha, parties at the offices of The Redertainment Corporation Of America are filled with yours truly singing songs sung by women. I do this because I know it's funny. I know it's funny to see a guy break gender norms and do things that might make people think he's gay. So, why does Justin Bieber sings songs written to be sung by women?

The tracks that play behind Justin's singing are rather good, but that's probably because of the fact that acclaimed R&B singer Usher produced this CD. Justin's vocal range isn't that good, but he's young and hasn't grown into his voice. I mean, look at the suff that Bow Wow is putting out now. Overall, My World 2.0 isn't bad, which is shocking seeing as, given the buzz I had heard beforehand, I was expecting horrendous abomination to recorded sound. It isn't that good either, outside of "That Should Be Me", most of this CD is what would constitute filler on most pop music albums. All in all, My World 2.0 is slightly above average.

Antiquated Communication 1

Dear Bethesda,
I've reached a point in this game where I need to level up to finish some of the missions, and I can't level up because all the missions that I can finish as current level suffers from a glitch that prevents me from completing the mission. In short, I'd like to play Fallout: New Vegas more, but I can't because of the glitches. Fix them. FIX THEM! FIX THE FUCKING BUGS IN FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS!!!

Dear West Valley City,
I live within the borders of your city. In this city, you hold us to a standard when it comes to the clearing of snow from our the sidewalk in front of our houses. We have 24 hours to clear the snow from out sidewalks or we get fined, a fine that gets higher the longer out sidewalks is not cleared. I see the need for our sidewalks to be clears, as I have many children, elderly, and disabled persons in my neighborhood. However, I don't think it's fair that you hold us to a standard when it comes to the clearing of snow from my sidewalk but no standard seems to exist for the clearing of snow from our roads.
The state of the roads in my neighborhood is unbearable. They are borderline impassible. If I was to park my car on the side of the street I live on, I'd basically be putting my car in a snowbank that I might not be able to get myself out of. Sure, the main roads that sit on the outside of my neighborhood are clear, but the roads inside the neighborhood are suited better for a dogsled than for a car.
I understand that West Valley City is a big place and that you have a limited amount of snowplows, but this is unacceptable. I want this dealt with. If you insist on holding us to a standard of clearing our sidewalks of snow within one days, I will hold you to the standard of clearing our roads within three. That standard for you is just as fair as the standard you hold us to.

Red Review: Gran Turismo 5

Gran Turismo 5 is a game that has been eagerly anticipated for about as long as the Playstation 3 has been in existence. Finally, after a long, long, long, long wait, GT5 was released to the world. A game of this caliber cannot be judged based on the visuals, sound, or gameplay alone. It must be judged on what is the equivalent of the different levels of this game, the tracks that you drive your high class luxury automobiles on. That is what I will do with this review.
Track #1- Chinese Democracy
The first track of Gran Turismo 5 is a nice opener. Combining elements from it's past with elements from the modern day, Chinese Democracy is a track with a nice tempo, pacing, and overall flow.
Track #2- Shackler's Revenge
Coming off the quick opening track, Shackler's Revenge is a high octane followup that keeps the pace of Gran Turismo 5 going. There is however an artificial feel to this track that takes away from this track's true greatness. Overall, this is a nice second track.
Track #3- Better
After the quickness of the first two tracks, Better is a nice change of pace. This track is slower but still maintains the rock hard pace that has been set forth.
Track #4- Street Of Dreams
The track Street Of Dreams feels like a track I've experienced in Gran Turismo's past. This isn't a bad thing for fans of Gran Turismo, The nostalgic quality is definitely welcomed by me. There is a long straightaway near the middle of this track that is truly beautiful.
Track #5- If The World
There is a Mediterranean quality to this track that I was not expecting. This is certainly an intriguing track that changed what I was expecting from the rest of Gran Turismo 5.
Track #6- There Was A Time
The opening of There Was A Time has a very grand quality to it. The place this track is set in is somewhere I would like to live in. This track serves also as a nice place to rest near the middle of this racing game.
Track #7- Catcher In The Rye
This track takes a second to kick in, and once it does you wish it would have kicked in harder. I also wonder if people will get some of the subtle references contained in this track, or if some of what you see in the building that line this track will go over the heads of most racing fans.
Track #8- Scraped
The opening of this track leads you down one path, but once the true nature of this track kicks in, it's incredibly jarring. Elements of the opening are brought back later, but the jarring quality of what makes up the majority of this track is a nice change of pace that was very appreciated by myself.
Track #9- Riad N' The Bedouins
First of all, this track has a very strange name. I'm not even sure what the Bedouins are. Once this tracks truly starts, the nature of the track changes frequently. It seems the makers of this track wanted gamers to experience a challenge, a true test of their street driving and off road racing skills, all in one track. This is good for a career mode, but I'm not sure if it'll translate to the arcade mode very well.
Track #10- Sorry
After the challenge, a nice mellow track. This is nice. Long sloping curves, large straightways, and an overall pleasant driving experience.
Track #11- I.R.S.
After the mellow track, a track to pick up the pace and wake the gamer up. Again, there are subtle references imbedded into this track that most gamers may not get. Not that that's a bad thing, but it's my experience that people appreciate what you're doing more if people know what you are doing.
Track #12- Madagascar
A grand quality starts this track, which gives the player an impression that the end is near. The atmosphere of this track seems a bit grating to me. Definitely the weakest track of this game when it comes to atmosphere.
Track #13- This I Love
If there was a track that expresses the love that many people have for cars and car racing, this track would express that love. Hell, you could even compare this track to many of the love ballads that I hear on the radio.
Track #14- Prostitute
So the end is here, and this track wraps up Gran Turismo 5 nicely. With the challenging parts of this game behind us, this track serves as a gift to the people who actually make it to the end of this game. This is a track that players can race on over and over, every time remembering the times they've had playing Gran Turismo 5 and Gran Turismo games in the past.
Overall, Gran Turismo 5 is a really great game. I'm sure that people who were scorned by the long, long, long, LONG, wait for this game will pass on this game, and it's their loss. Gran Turismo 5 may not get the accolades it deserves, but people who do experience this much anticipated game will get an experience that they will treasure as much and the games that will be laden with awards.

Gran Turismo 5: A
