Upside Down In Debt

How Jack Johnson's Parents Screwed Him And Left Him Millions In Debt

Wow.  It's unfortunate when people find themselves in situations like this, especially when that situation is created by the people you implicitly trust.  I remember seeing Jack Johnson in concert once.  I'd like to see him again.  It'll be sad if that doesn't happen because Jack Johnson is a truly gifted musician.

Facepalm

Report: NCAA Considering Restoring Joe Paterno's Vacated Wins

If the NCAA does this, it will prove that the NCAA has no moral authority when it comes to the consequences that it levees.  If the NCAA does this, it will make the NCAA even more of an irrelevant organization than it already it.  If the NCAA does this, they will become only a body that generates money and not a body that hold anybody to any real standard.

Sigh

The Ray Rice situation is enveloping the sports world.  I'm not going to post a link to the constantly evolving Ray Rice situation due to the fact that the facts behind this case may change by the time that I finish typing this sentence.  At times like this you need a release.  You need a break.  And, since the NFL is seemingly unfit to provide such a release, I turn another violent professional sport: The UFC and their Fight Night event coming up this Saturday.

However, UFC honcho Dana White tells TMZ Sports ... "This guy will never fight in the UFC again."

Am I The Only One Who Remembers?

CBS Will Launch The View For Sports, Actually Sounds Proud Of Bad Idea

There are things that trigger my memories of my twenties.  That time in my life when I was technically an adult but had none of the responsibilities of adulthood.  My hair was short, my goatee was somewhat managed, my sense of style was anti-style, and my mornings were spent watching lots of cable television.  Specifically I was watching this new phenomena called "Fox Sports Net".  This was during the early days of Fox Sports Net when it featured a younger Keith Olbermann, a short lived version of TNA Impact, and a show hosted by Tom Arnold.

The Best Damn Sports Show Period.  Am I the only one who remembers that we already had The View for sports?

The Problem With Google

Ex-ESPN Employee: My Boss Kept "Sexually Provocative" Pictures Of Me

Here is the problem with posting a story like this: People like me have Google.  People like me use Google.  People like me can use Google to search around for things online, things like embarrassing sexually suggestive pictures of people.  People like me can then not find those pictures, but can find out things about one or more persons involved in the story that can have negative consequences for the people the story is about.  People like me can use Google to find out things about people that is none of their fucking business.  Then again such actions are not the fault of Google or the people posting the story, it is the fault of the people who use Google for such purposes, but still people can use Google for these purposes.

I don't really have an ending for this.  Hey look a kittie!

This video reminds me of how team movement was explained in the opening sequence to the 1998 film Baseketball.  If you haven't seen this film, see it or you suck.

About Drug Testing

Report: NFL Drug Testing Is Screwed Up And Screwed Josh Gordon

I read this story yesterday and I've been thinking about it ever since.  This is not because I'm a Browns fan, a Josh Gordon fan, or because I'm a football fan.  This is because there's a situation that I've been following ever since the media started reporting it.

In recent years several states, including my own, have been implementing policies that require beneficiaries of certain public assistance programs, most prominently welfare, to undergo drug screening in order to get on and stay on public assistance.  The ethics of such requirements has been in debate, but the Josh Gordon situation brings up an even more troubling question.  Does drug testing even work?  Do the mechanisms that are in place to deliver and test a sample even work in giving consistent reliable results?  Does drug testing give consistent, reliable, and accurate results?  Can the results of drug testing be trusted?  If a multi-billion dollar sports league has systemic problems with a system that it has and currently is spending millions of dollars to set up, run, and maintain, do states suffer from similar problems, or perhaps even worse ones?

Vacation, All I Ever Wanted

Occasionally I like to think about what my dream vacation would be, particularly when I spend my weekend doing shit I really don't want to do.  More often when I dream like this I think of going to Vegas and seeing a bunch of shows, or going to New York and seeing the Daily Show.  It's not that I want to go to a place and relax or go to a place just to go to a place, I want to go somewhere and do something.

Or I could go to multiple places and get shitfaced.  I guess I'm weird that way.

Things That I Must Buy

There are some things that you find out about and instantly think "I'm going to buy this!"

Fleshlight Finally Made An iPad Case That You Can Have Sex With

Despite what you may think, this product is not one of those things that I have to go out and get.  This just strikes me as an attachment that allows you to use other attachments that cost more money and have to be replaced on a regular basis, resulting in you spending more money on products for this company.  Things like that don't appeal to me at all.

This, on the other hand, is one of those things I have to go out and buy.  How can I resist seeing Louis C.K., Sarah Silverman, Whitney Cummings, and Hannibal Buress in a venue that is right up the street from me?  There's just one problem.

Both of these events take place on September 6th.  Since both take place at the same time, I have to choose one or the other.  Or..........

Because there's an 11 AM performance, I can choose both!  September 6th is going to be a good day.

Bad On Top Of Bad

A couple of times in your life, you run across something that is unquestionably a bad idea.  Hitting a golf ball out of somebody's mouth is one of them.  It doesn't matter if the golfer in question is John Daly, a well known and trained golfer with decades of experience hitting golf balls for money.  The reason that this is a bad idea is this:

The story of the model suing Playboy after a golf stunt went wrong is one that made the rounds on the internet last month.  Given the date that the John Daly stunt occurred, the people involved in the stunt should have been aware of the botched Playboy stunt, and been more adverse to doing going forward with the stunt since major structural damage to the face due to impact with a golf driver is more likely than major structural damage to the buttocks due to impact with a golf driver.  Even the people involved in the Playboy stunt should have known better due to a previous radio stunt.

After the Hold Your Wee For A Wii contest, which resulted in the death of one of the participants, radio stations across the nation reformed the way that they handle contests, and became less likely to hold contest that involve actual physical activity.  In fact, long ago many radio stations stopped doing physical stunts altogether due to the liability that can come from such stunts, and the likelihood that the radio station, as well as it's corporate ownership, will get sued.  The Hold Your Wee For A Wii contest is why the Playboy stunt was a bad idea, and the Playboy stunt is why the John Daly stunt was a bad idea.  It's bad on top of bad.  Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to watch the video of the Playboy stunt over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

Reprehensible Kinky Behavior

The problem of college students getting drunk and causing a ruckus has been a problem for a while, but the problem as it relates to collegiate athletes became acute when accusations were made against the Duke Lacrosse team in 2006.  While the athletes accused were ultimately exonerated, the whole incident cast a paul over Duke, lacrosse teams in general, and collegiate athletes as a whole.  Personally, I think the problem of college students engaging in such behavior speaks to the irresponsible nature of the youth of today.  Kids today simply do not understand the breath of scope of the results of their actions, and the culture today of permissiveness and quick repentance only encourages such behavior.  This generation may be lost, but it is my hope that the next generation of kids learn from their elders mistakes and approach their lives with respect and decency.

Wait, there are also women engaging in this behavior?  Never mind, I want to fully encourage this behavior in every place and venue.  Especially online.  Please.

STOP THE RIDE I WANNA GET OFF!!!

Like many other sites on the intertubes, Deadspin has a NCAA Tournament Challenge that people can join and get the opportunity to win prizes and get one over on that one guy in the office who thinks they're a basketball junkie.  Being a dutiful lemming, I joined this challenge in the hopes that I won't suck at this year's NCAA bracket nearly as much as I did last year.  On Tuesday, an email was sent by someone in the Deadspin NCAA Tournament group to everyone else in the Deadspin NCAA Tournament group.  This one email was only the beginning.  Just before leaving for work, I cleared my email of all the messages that had come in during the morning.  I have about a twenty minute commute to work.  The picture displayed below shows just how many emails came in during that twenty minutes.

67.  I received 67 emails during my twenty commute to work.  Then I got to my job, set my phone to silent, and got to work.  Four hours later I took my lunch break.  Here is how many emails I received during the four hours between when I started work and my lunch break.

181.  No, really, I received 181 emails from people in the Deadspin NCAA Tournament group.  Another four hours went by and my work was done for the day.  Here is how many emails I received during those four hours.

59.  So the rate of emails being sent went down, but still I received 59 emails in four hours.  I usually don't get that much in a week.  Many of these messages were spam.  Many of these messages were people bitching about Deadspin.  Many of these messages were people bitching about receiving multiple emails.  Many of these messages were porn.  What I can say about all of these messages were that they were unwanted and I don't know how to stop receiving them.  In fact, in the twenty minutes since I started crafting this blog post, I have received 22 emails from people in the Deadspin NCAA Tournament group.  And, just after writing that sentence I received two more.  I'm not kidding.  And there's another.  Please, STOP THE RIDE I WANNA GET OFF!!!

What A Perfect Morning

Ah, morning.  What a perfect time to reflect on the world and enjoy the beauty that is in it.  Since I work evenings and have nothing pressing to do in the morning, I can spend every morning reveling in the newness of the day.  For example, this morning I woke up, turned on SportsCenter, got myself a cup of coffee, and caught up on the news.

Comcast SportsNet Airs Our Version Of Cubs Mascot With Cock And Balls

Every morning I am met with many examples of just how good the world is simply by looking through my favorite RSS reader.

My life is filled with positivity as it rains over my world every morning as I reenact this ritual.

Not only is my view of the world uplifted, but also my view of the people that are in it.

I credit my overall positive outlook on the world to being able to discover more and more things about my world each and every morning, and I thank the internet for giving me the tools that allow me to do so.  I look forward to learning more about the world as well as gaining a deeper understanding of the people in it.  Who knows, I may use such a positive mindset in my writing.  Perhaps I already have.
