Walking In A Network With Words

This Is A Good Day

There's a flower box just outside of my apartment building that I always treasure walking by. I always enjoy the sweet smell and vibrant colour of plants in full bloom. Any kind of plant seems beautiful to me. Marigolds growing in the part, daffodils poking out of the sidewalk, even grass has a unique beauty to me. The world coming into life seems to invigorate me and make me feel even more full as a woman.

On nice morning, like the ones we've been having lately, I will choose to leave my car in it's drab oil stained holding place, and take a leisurely stroll to work, passing by all the best things this city has to offer. People pleasantly greeting the day, kids running along in packs to fun places of their own design, the sounds of a city just on the verge of waking up. Even the breeze blowing through the tall building has a special place in my heart. The feeling as the air passing against, into, and through me brings me into contact with my body in a way that is more spiritual than sexual. The blissful feeling that I have walking through this city is one I wish I could hold onto for the entire day. Sadly, that can not be.

As I get to work, I enter another drab oil stained holding place. This time the holding place is stained with the oil that is drizzled on salads people are deceived into thinking is healthy for them. It's not that I don't like salads, it's that anything that big that contains that much cheese, bacon, and toxins is surely not healthy for you. Sadly, the putrid smell that emanates from those salads seems to diffuse into the surrounding area. I swear, everything around the offices I work in seems dead. The grass is not naturally green, unless you count the natural dyes in paint as being from nature. The trees are nothing more than oddly cut lumber that does more to provide bike messengers a place to park than to positively add to the ambience of this place. Even the concrete, which is already dead, is made to feel even more dead. The way the sidewalk is cracked and crumbling prevents people from taking a walk without having to worry about tripping on it.

The people who work with me are somewhat better than the surrounding here. Well, most of them are. The security guy is a big teddy bear with a effervescent smile that greets anyone he encounters, whether or not he gets a smile in return. My boss, while still infected with the evil that comes with being a part of the corporate world, is a pleasant man to be around. He's more pleasant if he's holding a snifter of brandy. There is one guy who's mood seems to match the ambience here. He's the bright star, the young player, the one who this company's future is built upon. It's too bad that he carries negativity with him, like the Earth of the back of Atlas. It's also too bad that his negativity infects me nearly everyday. It always seems to happen when we ride the elevator together. I try to say something to the guy like,

"Isn't it a beautiful day?"

He always seems to reply with a grumble as he drinks his brown bubbly beverage.

"Doesn't everything seem so alive and new?"

Again, grumble into beverage.

"How can you not be enlightened by surroundings like this?"

It's usually at this point that the guy's response rises above a grumble.

"I know you have a generally optimistic outlook toward life, but I can't stand crap like that."

Ouch. That response, or ones like that, usually make me feel down for a second or two. This response, however, was different. You see, the guy I was talking to usually says shit. This time he said crap. This response showed progress in the outlook of my company's bright star. This is a good day.

GIVE ME BACK MY NETWORK!!!

Recently, speculation has been rampant as so how Sony will address the PlayStation Network outages at the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo. However, recently some credible information has come forth. In a conversation in a internet relay chat room, a user identified as J4y50|\|13731r has posted online the full text of a planned speech to be delivered by Sony's Executive Deputy President Kaz Hirai. Here is the speech:

The whole world now knows my network, PSN, was hacked for no discernible reason in April. This is a recent photograph of my network. PSN, if you're watching, we love you. And the large amount of American money sitting in front of me, well this is what waits for the man that took him. This is your ransom. Two million dollars in unmarked bills, just like all you stupid hackers want.

But this is as close as you hackers ever get to it. You'll never see one dollar of this money, because no ransom will ever be paid for my network. Not one dime. Not one penny.

Instead, I'm offering this money as a reward on your head. Dead or alive, it doesn't matter. So, congratulations hackers. You've just become a two million dollar lottery ticket, except the odds are much, much better. Do you know anyone that wouldn't turn you in for two million dollars? I don't think you do. I doubt it. So, wherever you go and whatever you do, this money will be tracking you down for all time.

And to insure that it does, to keep interest alive, I'm running a full-page add in every major newspaper, television show, magazine, blog, internet forum, and IRC channel, every Sunday for as long as it takes. But -- and this is your last chance -- you return my network, alive, uninjured, I'll withdraw the bounty. With any luck, you can simply disappear. Understand? You will never see this money. Not one dollar.

So, you hackers still have a chance to do the right thing. If you don't, well, then, God be with you, because nobody else on this earth will be.

Televisionia

Televisionia

Down the street from The Official Offices of The Redertainment Corporation Of America is a diner. This diner serves good, healthy dinners and fine sandwiches for the lunch rush. This diner also offers delivery, which is how I usually gave this diner business while I was working on my writing. This diner is called Televisionia. Recently, the delivery service was temporarily suspended, meaning if I wanted to continue eating from this diner I had to go down to the diner and get the food myself. On Wednesday, I did this. I went down to the diner, ordered their signature "The Chicago Code" and took a seat as I waited for my order. As I waited, a middle aged man came up from the back part of the diner and talked to me.

"Hello," the man said to me.

"Hi," I replied.

"It's good to see you in here."

"Okay." I didn't know what to make of this conversation.

"I'm sorry if I'm weirding you out. It's just with the closure of one of the streets in front of my diner, the Peabody Strauss Netherway, business has been down a bit."

"So, you're the owner of this diner."

"Yes." The man then extended his hand to me. "I am Hulu Televisionia, and I own this place."

I shook Hulu's hand, and said, "Good to meet you. By the way, have the people working on the road told you when they'll be done?"

"No. The people working on the road, South Orange North Yolk didn't even tell me that they were going to be working on the road before the just started tearing it up."

"Really? That's fucked up."

"Yes. I wouldn't use that strong of language, but yes, it is. Anyway, I wanted to offer you this." Hulu then dug into the pocket on the front of his shirt and handed me a piece of paper. This paper was a coupon for a free meal from Televisionia.

"Ah thank you. But, why are you doing this? I mean it's not your fault that the road was torn up."

"Yes, but I want my customers to know that I appreciate their continued business. Also, this serves as a good PR boost for me, something South Orange North Yolk seems not to be interested in."

I put the coupon in my pocket and said, "Well, thanks. I'll have to use this the next time I come in."

"Great. Enjoy your meal." Hulu said this to me as me order was delivered to me. I stepped outside, intending to make my way back to my office, when I looked and saw something that caught my attention. Hulu saw that something had caught my attention. "You aren't thinking of using the coupon now, are you?"

"No, I just saw that." I pointed toward another road crew working on a road that serves as a alternate to the Peabody Strauss Netherway. "What is that?"

"Oh, that is the Liveway. It's a road that been rumored for a while, but the people making the road just recently got finished."

I was shocked by this. "Really?"

"Yes."

"Can people use this road as an alternative to get to your diner?"

"Yes." Hulu started smiling.

"So, will your delivery service be back up and running soon."

"Yes, on Friday in fact." Hulu was now smiling ear to ear.

"That's cool. You must be very happy."

"Yes, I am."

"By the way, who's doing that road work?"

"Microsoft."

I was shocked by this. "Really? They make roads?"

"Yes, Microsoft kind of does everything. They're like Walmart, except not the kind of evil that Walmart is."

"Hmmm. Well, I look forward to giving you more business." I walked away from Televisionia, with my order in hand, intending to go back to that diner again and again and again, thanks to the fine road work done by Microsoft.

Legal Sparkles!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Hunter Ortiz El Red Samaritano

On Saturday, April 23rd, 2011, I sent the following email to the address of Orange Lounge Radio, a podcast that airs live on the internet Sunday nights on allgames.com.

Dear Peoples,

Like you, I have been following the recent PSN outages since they started popping up on Wednesday night. When I first discovered these outages I was frustrated, raged out, and cursed so loud my neighbors thought I was killing someone. Not kidding.

Anyway, in the process of following this story, I found this story that I'm sure you covered earlier on in the show:
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/sonys-playstation-network-hit-by-external-intrusion/12483
Once I read this story I became considerable less angry as I can understand Sony taking actions like this in response to this threat, to a point. However, there is one part of story that really concerns me.
"In order to “verify the smooth and secure operation” of the services Sony pulled the plug on both services April 20th."
This sentence gives me the impression that this isn't a simple hacking job. Given Sony's recent movements in relation to piracy, I believe that may be the nature of Sony taking down PSN. I believe someone figured out how to pirate games distributed digitally via PSN. Please feel free to tell me if any of these conclusions are wrong.

Also, why do I have to go through PSN or Live to access Hulu Plus or Netflix? I mean when I want to watch Hulu on my laptop all I have to do is fire up my browser, go through my ISP, and get to what I want to watch. I don't have to go through my laptop manufacture's exclusive network to access things, so why do I have to do it on home consoles?

This message has been brought to you by the successor to Anonmyous, who is actually responsible for PSN being shut down and is totally unknown to the public. Nya nya! :P

This email was read live on the air on the 410th episode of Orange Lounge Radio, available via podcast right now. On Monday, this story broke:

Rumor: 'Rebug' custom firmware enabled 'free' PSN downloads, forced Sony's network shutdown
by Randy Nelson on Apr 25th 2011 6:05PM

According to PSX-Scene former moderator, "chesh," the now six-day-long PlayStation Network outage is the result of a particularly exploitative custom firmware (CFW) modification for PS3. In a post on Reddit, chesh claims that a CFW known as "Codename: Rebug" had given its users the ability to log into PSN as if they were doing so from a developer console (or "debug unit").

As a result, chesh contends, this same exploit allowed its users to add funds from "dummy" credit card accounts into their PSN wallets, ostensibly giving them the ability to "unlock" (read: steal) certain PlayStation Store content. Joystiq's research into the purported exploit has turned up multiple tutorials detailing the process, which appears alarmingly easy to execute on consoles running the Rebug CFW.

The hack does not allow its users to access the credit card or other personal information of PSN users, chesh adds. Nevertheless, as we reported earlier today, Sony is working to rule out information theft as part of its investigation during the maintenance outage in which the company is also implementing new security measures.

Sony has not yet responded to our request for comment on this story.

This sequence of events confirms one thing: I am a psychic!!! When I see things in my mind, they motherfucking happen! Since I am a psychic, and the things that I see happen, I am prepared to make a bold pronouncement that all of you should take to heart like the words of a prophet.

This is a leaked picture of what is supposed to be Nintendo's next console.

This is a leaked picture of what is supposed to be the controller for Nintendo's next console. I, the newly christened Hunter Ortiz El Red Samaritano, am here to tell you the truth of what lies in the future. These pictures are not real. These pictures are red herrings meant to lead the online public in a false direction. The rumors about the new controller are false, laughably so. Ha ha ha ha.

When Nintendo announces their new console, sometime in mid-May, it will be more powerful than the PS3 but will utilize DVDs, not those expensive Blu-Rays that benefit one of Nintendo's direct rivals. The design of the controller for Nintendo's next console will resemble the Gamecube controller. However, in a move that will not be as successful as Nintendo wants it to be, the Nintendo 3DS will be able to be used as a controller for Nintendo's next console. This capability will mainly be used for first party titles and will last for only three years.

Finally, Nintendo's next console will come into the market at the price of $400, in order to compete directly with the PS3, which, due to the clusterfuck that is the PSN outages, will drop in popularity never to recover.

As far as a name...
...
...
I got nothing. Try Miss Cleo. She might know the name of Nintendo's next console, as well as when your next hookup will be. Sparkles!

So, Just To Be Clear...

According to this, Sony Computer Entertainment of America first identified that there was a security breach and that user data might have been compromised on April 19th. From personal experience, I know PSN was shut down on the night of April 20. Finally, Sony confirmed that this security breach had happened, after being completely tight lipped about why they shut down PSN, on April 26th, a full week after the security breach happened. So...
WHAT THE FUCK TOOK THEM SO LONG TO TELL US THAT OUR, OUR, PERSONAL INFORMATION HAD BEEN COMPROMISED?
Do we not have the right to know exactly what someone is doing with our personal information? Do we not have a obligation to ensure that our personal information is being protected by those that we trust it to? And, if that trust is broken, how can we trust those people with our personal information again?

In short, I do not trust Sony with my personal information. When PSN goes back up, I will be deleting my account, completely. Not merely taking my credit card off my account, or filling the account with junk info, I will have the account deleted. I find that any other Sony division has my personal information, I will move to have that information removed from their possession as well. Furthermore, if SCEA continues to possess my personal information, no matter what that personal information is, for any reason, I will pursue legal action to have my personal information removed from their possession. Don't think I'm serious? These are my lawyers:

This is Ed Brass.

Reasoning For Cursing

Julia Diana Bobbi is sitting in her office watching a video on her computer. It the 4/17/11, specifically the segment involving Sen. Mike Lee, Republican from Utah. Julia is watching this video with an increasingly exasperated look on her face. Once the video is over, Julia presses a button on her phone.

Julia Diana Bobbi- Hunter, can you come in here, please?

Moments later, Hunter Red enters Julia's office.

Hunter Red- Julia?
Julia Diana Bobbi- Hunter, I just watched one of our senators, Mike Lee, on Meet The Press.
Hunter Red- I watched that as well.
Julia Diana Bobbi- Hunter, I now understand why you swear when you listen to politicians. I don't consider that the responsible or correct response, but I understand why you do it.
Hunter Red- Julia, I don't consider that to be a great response either. However, I've tried other responsible responses. I've tried sending letters, I've tried calling people on the phone, I've tried giving money to campaigns. None of them have done any good. The only way I can rid myself of my anger at politicians is to swear.
Julia Diana Bobbi- I know.

Hunter takes a couple of steps out of Julia's office, then returns.

Hunter Red- You know, I may not have any alternative but to swear, but you have different alternatives available to you.
Julia Diana Bobbi- How do you figure?
Hunter Red- You are in Utah. You are a white, Mormon, conservative. You are in the majority, the overwhelming majority. Those in power will listen to you.
Julia Diana Bobbi- You think so?
Hunter Red- Yes. They will listen to you more than they will listen to me.

Julia begins to think over what Hunter had just said as he leaves her office. Julia turns toward her computer, types and clicks for a minute, then begins to say something aloud.

Julia Diana Bobbi- Dear Senator Lee...

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Condemnations

This picture offends me deeply. I can barely begin to articulate just how this picture offends me. Any attempt to express my offense only skims the surface. I mean just look at this picture. Look at it. Look at the background. I realize that the background of a picture should not take away from the foreground, but does every picture studio need to use the same background? I remember seeing this photo when the Red family photo was taken last year, ten years ago, and even twenty years ago. I mean, come on photographers of America, use your imaginations. Come up with a background that is not bland leftovers from the Disco Era.

Trumping Publicity

Julia Diana Bobbi is sitting at her desk. The receptionist of The Redertainment Corporation Of America, Liz, calls to Julia from her desk in the general office area.

Liz- Julia, you've got a call on line 3.
Julia Diana Bobbi- Thank you.

Julia picks up the phone and talks to the person on the other end. After nearly every sentence, Julia listens to what the other person says, never interrupting who she is listening to. The only reason why spaces are not given in this account is to save space.

Julia Diana Bobbi- Hello? Why hello. Yes, I am in charge of interviews for Redertainment. Yes, I am interested in an interview. Is Monday okay? Allright, Friday works for me. In the morning? Sorry, evening. Okay, I can do that. Just a quick question, what do you want to discuss? Ah, yes. I've heard you talk about those issues in other interviews, do you want to delve any deeper into those issues? No. Do you want to make any announcement about your future intentions? No. So, why do you want to talk to me? No, I just don't want to waste my time giving someone free publicity when they could just as easily take out an ad in our publications. Okay. So the interview is off? Okay, goodbye then.

Julia hangs up the phone.

Julia Diana Bobbi- Man. What a waste of my time.

An Amendment From My Comments Earlier

Recently I went to Lowe's. I'm going to be starting a garden, and to do that I need some gardening supplies. One of these gardening supplies is manure, which is a fancy way to say bullshit. I found a fifty pound bag of manure at Lowe's for nine dollars. This caused me to come to the following conclusion: PSN is not bullshit. Bullshit costs money.

First Fake Interviews, Now...

Red Guest- The Rachel Maddow Show

Rachel Maddow is sitting in her New York MSNBC studio doing her show as she usually does.

Coming up, my exclusive interview with Matt Taibbi. He will talk to us about Rolling Stone's lawsuit against Rolling Stone, the Ugandan newspaper that printed the names and addresses of several gay men, many of whom were subsequently killed. That is coming up, but first many states have a wide variety of state emblems. Montana, for instance, has deemed the Grizzly Bear to be it's official animal. Oklahoma has the festive Mistletoe as it's state flower. And New York has decreed that the cute as a bug Ladybug it the state insect. Utah has many state emblems. Ranging from it's state fossil being the Allosaurus, the state folk dance being the square dance, and the state cooking pot being the dutch oven. Dutch oven cooking has a unique place in Utah history, calling back to Utah's pioneer roots. Explorers like Jim Bridger and Peter Skene Ogden would often cook up delicious stews and tasty fruit cobblers while they were out on their trapping excursions.

Now the state of Utah is set to decree another state emblem. A gun. The Browning M1911 semiautomatic pistol, invented by Utah native Jim Browning, yes that Browning, is set to be decreed the official state firearm of the state of Utah. This move is considered to be quite peculiar after the shootings in Tucson, as well as increasing amounts of gun crime in Mexico being linked to firearms purchased in the states surrounding the US/Mexico border.

Hunter Red, pictured above, joins Rachel Maddow at her New York studio, sitting camera left.

Rachel Maddow- Here to try to make sense of it is Hunter Red, writer and blogger for The Four Stars Blog. Hunter, thank you being here.
Hunter Red- Thanks for having me.
Rachel Maddow- I heard about this story a couple of weeks ago, and I didn't believe that I saw. No state in the nation has an official state gun, Utah would be the first. Why do you think they would do this?
Hunter Red- Well, you touched on it in your intro. The Browning M1911 was invented by Jim Browning, who was born in Ogden, Utah. Much of his life's work was done in Utah, and the Browning Arms Company continues to be headquartered in Mountain Green, Utah.
Rachel Maddow- But why now? Why is the Utah state legislature moving to honor a gun?
Hunter Red- They aren't trying to honor a gun, they're trying to honor the man, Jim Browning. They tried honoring Jim Browning last year and was unsuccessful in doing so.
Rachel Maddow- How so?
Hunter Red- Well, last year, the state legislature proposed giving Jim Browning his own holiday. Now, they didn't want to give him his own day. Instead, they wanted to combine it with an already established holiday.
Rachel Maddow- What holiday was that?
Hunter Red- Martin Luther King Day.

Rachel Maddow is shocked by this.

Rachel Maddow- Martin Luther King Day?
Hunter Red- Yes.
Rachel Maddow- The civil rights leader?
Hunter Red- Yes.
Rachel Maddow- The man who was shot with a gun?
Hunter Red- Yes.
Rachel Maddow- Wow. That is really messed up.
Hunter Red- It didn't take you long to come to that conclusion, did it?
Rachel Maddow- No it did not. I also wanted to talk to you about Curtis Oda's bill-
Hunter Red- The feral animal bill?
Rachel Maddow- Yes. Now, on the face of it, this seems totally repugnant.
Hunter Red- Yes, it does. Fortunately, when the bill was put through committee, the bill was softened a bit. Now the bill says that you can only kill an animal that you think is ferall and is attacking you.
Rachel Maddow- That's good to hear, but why was this law proposed in the first place?
Hunter Red- The issue of feral animals, particularly in rural areas, is something that was brought up when a law criminalizing animal cruelty was passed two years ago. In fact, this issue is why the same bill was tabled the year before it was passed.
Rachel Maddow- So, they are just concerned with untamed animals in rural areas?
Hunter Red- Not all untamed animals. Just things like cats. dogs, and rodents.
Rachel Maddow- This- this is just a little to much for me to comprehend. I wonder why Utah, particularly it's state legislature, is acting, what seems to me, to be a little bit crazy this year.
Hunter Red- This year?
Rachel Maddow- Yes, this year.
Hunter Red- Rachel, it was worse last year.
Rachel Maddow- How so?
Hunter Red- Well, in addition to the proposed Jim Browning holiday, there was a law, actually passed, that decrees that the state of Utah has jurisdiction over the population of wolves within it's borders. Now there are two distinct problems with this.
Rachel Maddow- Is the first that wolves are an endangered species, and therefore it's population is under the control of the federal government?
Hunter Red- Yes, that is the first problem. The second is that there are no wolves in the state of Utah.
Rachel Maddow- None?
Hunter Red- None.
Rachel Maddow- But, how can you control a population that does not exist in your state? That would be like me saying that I have control of all of the dutch oven cooking pots in this studio, despite the fact that there are no dutch oven cooking pots in this studio.
Hunter Red- Exactly. There is also the dual resignations that bookended the last legislative session.
Rachel Maddow- You are referring to the resignation of former governor John Huntsman?
Hunter Red- No. I am referring to the resignations of Sheldon Killpack and Kevin Garn.
Rachel Maddow- What happened there?
Hunter Red- I could tell you, but I think this segment is about over-
Rachel Maddow- We can go long if you like.
Hunter Red- I don't want to obstruct with the flow of the show, or take any time away from the Rolling Stone story. But, what I would like to touch upon is the interview given last year by state senator Chris Buttars.
Rachel Maddow- Chris Buttars. Who is that?
Hunter Red- Chris Buttars is senator who's legislative efforts work to, in my opinion, make the state of Utah a more inhospitable place to homosexuals and liberals in general.
Rachel Maddow- That can be debated, but go on.
Hunter Red- Last year, Buttars gave an interview to Reed Cowen, former Utah news reporter who was working in a documentary.
Rachel Maddow- Which documentary was that?
Hunter Red- 8: The Mormon Proposition. As a part of this documentary, Chris gave an interview where he said several inflammatory things towards homosexuals. These are comments that I thought, given your championing of gay issues, would have just run with.
Rachel Maddow- Which comments are those?
Hunter Red- First, Chris said that all homosexuals engage in pig sex.
Rachel Maddow- Pig sex? What is that?
Hunter Red- I don't know, and neither did Reed Cowen, who asked Buttars to elaborate on what pig sex was. Chris wouldn't explain, since he was in a public place and didn't want to describe behavior like that in public. But, Buttars said that all gay people know what pig sex is. Buttars was saying this to Mr. Cowen, who had no idea what he was talking about and is gay.
Rachel Maddow- I'm getting the wrap it up signal from my producer.
Hunter Red- Okay, the second thing Buttars said in that interview was "Homosexuality is the greatest threat is America going down today."

Rachel is stunned by this.

Rachel Maddow- What?

Hunter Red is smiling.

Hunter Red- Yes.
Rachel Maddow- Chris Buttars said that, in that way, with that exact vocabulary?
Hunter Red- Yes, he said exactly that.
Rachel Maddow- Wow. Looks like we may be paying more attention to the goings on in the Utah state legislature in the future.
Hunter Red- About damn time.
Rachel Maddow- Thanks you, Hunter, for being here.
Hunter Red- My pleasure.
Rachel Maddow- Up next, my interview with Matt Taibbi about the Ugandan Rolling Stone situation. Stay tuned.

Red Impressions: Hulu Plus

On Monday I started fooling around with Hulu Plus. I wanted to watch Fringe and was tired of watching it on my laptop. As it turns out, Hulu Plus doesn't offer Fringe, The Simpsons, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, or the shows on G4 that I watch on Hulu because I have DirecTV.

However, many of the shows that I currently watch on Hulu are on Hulu Plus. House, 30 Rock, and The Office are prime examples. I recently caught up on Parks And Rec. I also caught up on Family Guy, which looks remarkable in high definition. There's also one show recently added to Hulu Plus that I can't function without.

The Colbert Report, with The Rev. Sir Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, D.F.A.. Before viewing the Colbert Report on Hulu Plus, I had never seen the great The Rev. Sir Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, D.F.A. in high definition before, and I never want to go back. As mesmerized as I was by his image before, I am even more enticed by The Rev. Sir Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, D.F.A. now. Sure, The Daily Show is also on Hulu Plus, but all high def does for that show is make Jon Stewart look even older than he does in standard def.

The biggest complaint I have in relation to this service has nothing to do with Hulu Plus. Rather, it has to do with the online architecture that I dues to connect to Hulu Plus. You see, I watched Hulu Plus on my Playstation 3, which is connected to the internet via the Playstation Network, and PSN sucks. This is a chronic problem I've had with PSN. I've tried diagnosing it on my end. My ISP isn't to blame, my modem isn't to blame, my wireless router isn't to blame, the wireless connector inside the PS3 isn't to blame, I can't find anything on my end that would prevent me from getting connected, staying connected, and maintaining a decent speed on PSN.

Overall, Hulu Plus is a nice service. It's not a replacement for my DirecTV, but is a great way to see television shows in HD anytime I want. The connectivity problems are a drawback, but hopefully will be solved when the Xbox 360 Hulu Plus service is rolled out. Here's hoping they work out a deal so I can finally experience Fringe in the high definition awesomeness I've been hearing about.

****- Three Religious Experiences While Wanking To Heavy Rain

The Plan Of Nintendo Rumble Salvation

Rumors have been flying recently about Nintendo’s plans for a possible DS 2. After digging around in a 2005 patent filing, a diagram has been found that could possibly be a schematic for a rumble system for a handheld console.

Now this diagram may be too complicated for people with limited knowledge of electronics and the trade of electrical engineering. So, after asking several electricians for a more approachable way to explain this, the following diagram has been produced.

Apparently the whole rumbling system begins even before the player plays a game. However, due to a “Veil of Failness”, not much is known for certain about this aspect of this rumbling process. When the player starts to play the game the player must meet a certain number of parameters to achieve even a small level of rumbling glory. All can achieve rumbling glory, but only a select few can achieve the full glory that is Perfect Rumbling.

After several more steps, including the possibility of being saved after the character you portray unfortunately dies, there are three levels of rumbling glory that can be attained. The first is the previously mentioned Perfect Rumbling, which is hard to achieve and may never be realized by most gamers. The second is Acceptable Rumbling, which is all right, but given the awesomeness of Perfect Rumbling, Acceptable Rumbling is barely acceptable. The final is Fail Rumbling, which feels like nothing more than a slight tapping and actually makes more noise than movement. Fail Rumbling is reserved for the worst of the worst, the baddest of the bad, the most failtastic of the fail. You’d have to be a pretty fucked up player to achieve Fail Rumbling.

As a Nintendo DS 2 has yet to be announced or even acknowledged by Nintendo, it is unknown where, when, and how this new rumbling system will be implemented. It is also unknown if the rumbling system mentioned in this story will actually be like this when gamers encounter it. I guess we’ll just see whose system of lemming like belief is correct.

Dear God Why?

Another Reason To Avoid UAE, other than the whole being a searing desert thing.

On February 22nd, the United Arab Emirates banned the importation and sale of the PS3 title Heavy Rain. In a statement on this ban, UAE Culture and Communications Minister Farooq Aziz said the following:

“The reason the Culture and Communications Ministry has banned the video game Heavy Rain is not the fully nude woman you can view at about three hours in. Nor is it the naked man ass you can view at about ten minutes in. Nor is it that you can make the playable characters urinate on a frequent basis. The CACM banned Heavy Rain because of Quantic Dream’s flagrant and grotesque depiction of women as humans.

“The United Arab Emirates hardline interpretation of the holy Qur’an dictates that we treat all females as objects with no more rights and privileges than a fern. The UAE CACM also insists that all media that is imported conforms to our interpretation of the Islamic faith, the one and only true faith as revealed to the prophet Mohammed, praise be unto him.

“Quantic Dream’s depiction of its female characters with realistic emotions and realistic drives and desires offends us deeply as it runs in conflict with our preferred depiction of women. That being emotionless vessels for our male heirs and unworthy female subjects. Untill Quantic Dream conforms to that standard, Heavy Rain will not be permitted in our country. That, or until they bribe me.”
In other news, the state of Utah has also banned Heavy Rain for similar reasons as the United Arab Emirates.

DOA: Wanking Cancelled?

Heavy Rain First Impressions

I bought Heavy Rain on the day it was released. The first thing I needed to do upon putting Heavy Rain into my PS3 and starting it up was to download an update. If this was a 360 game and I was dealing with Live, this process would have taken just a couple of minutes. Unfortunately this was a PS3 game and I was dealing with PSN.

The first time I tried to download this update the download started but stopped and didn’t get started again for seemingly no reason at all. The second time it stalled before even starting the download for, again, seemingly no reason at all. The third time the download started and kept on going, but the speed at which it was downloading was unacceptable. I was able to watch an entire episode of The Dish in the time it took to download the update.

Once the update was downloaded the next thing to do was install Heavy Rain to the PS3’s hard drive. Unlike other games where they give you a progress bar or Old Snake to look at, Heavy Rain actually gives you something to do.
Heavy Rain Origami Start
Included in the package with Heavy Rain is this square piece of paper. During the installation process, you are given instructions on how to turn this piece of paper into this.
Heavy Rain Origami Final
By the time you are finished crafting this piece of origami, the installation should be complete.

This whole process, infuriating at first and somewhat rewarding at the end, took about an hour. An hour I could have spent playing the game. Let’s just hope the actual playing of Heavy Rain offers more rewards than just a paper artform to put next to my Modern Warfare 2 night vision goggles.

Shawn

I remember happier times with my dad. In the backyard playing helicopter and airplane with him and my brother. Watching him draw buildings that people could live and play in. Even him comforting me as I mourned the loss of my pet bird are things that I look back on fondly now.

After the accident that took my brother away, my dad never seemingly got up. He looks depressed, isn’t maintaining himself the way he used to, and even walks around like he doesn’t quite have a handle on how to do so fluidly. He doesn’t even eat well, not that the microwaved chicken is anything to salivate over.

I know he means well, I can see the remorse for his failings in his eyes as he tucks me in at night. Perhaps one day he will pick himself up and find a way out of this perpetual downpour. At least then he might shave off that short scruffily beard he’s grown.

Heavy Rain Second Impressions

Video games tend to follow a similar basic structure: Level, level, boss, level, level, bigger boss, level, level, bigger boss, level, boss, bigger boss, final boss. Nearly every video game does this. Mario, Metroid, Mega Man, Zelda, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, World of Warcraft, and on and on and on.

Before its release, Heavy Rain was talked about not being a video game. I don’t know why this is because Heavy Rain follows basic video game structure, it’s just presented differently. Inner monologue, dialog between characters, fight scene, discovery of a plot point, discussion of the plot point, fight scene, character development, plot development, fight scene.

I’m not saying that this is a bad thing. This kind of basic video game structure can produce a challenging and compelling video game experience, if it is done well. Heavy Rain appears to be utilizing this structure very well, so far…

Tiger Woods PGA 10 Wii Review

Hunter Red is at his doctor's office waiting to be examined. Hunter is sitting on the exam table when his doctor, Dr. Whitmore, enters with Hunter's chart in his hand.

Dr. Whitmore- So, Mr. Hunter-
Hunter Red- It's Mr. Red. My name is Hunter Red, Red is my last name.
Dr. Whitmore looks at the chart and says,
W- Sorry, I thought that was a typo. So, Mr. Red, it says here you're experiencing some arm pain.
H- Yes, my right shoulder is sore and some times my bicep will twitch on it's own.
W- Okay, lets have you take off your shirt and hold your arm out to the side.
Hunter does what the doctor asks and Dr. Whitmore starts to examine Hunter's arm.
W- Do you get much exercise Mr. Hunter?
R- Not really.
W- You play sports much?
R- No, I kind of really suck at them.
W- So, what were you doing when you started experiencing this discomfort?
R- I was playing the new Tiger Woods PGA.
W- What is that?
R- It's a video game.
W- You know, if you injure yourself playing a video game, you might be really out of shape.
R- Well I was playing it on the Wii, and on the Wii version of the new Tiger Woods game, you have to actually make the swinging motion.
W- So you actually have to swing to play the game?
R- Yeah.
W- And how well does that work?
R- It's kinda good. I haven't gotten down how to do a eighty or seventy-five percent swing, and putting is a pain in the ass-
W- Putting is a pain in real life.
R- Yeah but I've seen it done better ways in different games. Even the 360 version of this year's Tiger Woods has a better putting mechanic. You play golf Doctor?
W- Yeah, in real life, not in a video game.
R- What's your lowest round?
W- Full 18?
R- Yeah.
W- I shot an even par 72 once. I got really lucky that day. How about you?
R- Oh, I've never been golfing in real life.
W- No, I mean in this video game.
R- Oh, I shot a 57 at St. Andrews.
W- Was this just a one time occurrence like with my 72?
R- No, I've shot it five times. I just have to hit it the ball really close to the pin so I don't have to putt for too long of a distance.
W- Ah. Well, I see no real problems with your arm, it just seems like you don't get much exercise and started swinging your arms a lot.
R- Uh-huh.
W- Just give your arm a few days rest, but after that, stretch properly and get a good amount of exercise.
R- Okay.
Hunter hops down off the table and puts his shirt back on.
R- By the way, how much will this visit cost me?
W- Well, you have insurance, so it shouldn't cost you no more than $150.
R- $150? Why does it cost me so much?
W- Because you have insurance. If you didn't have insurance it would cost you considerably much more. Hope to see you again soon Mr. Hunter.
R- It's Mr. Red.
THE END

The Truth Behind The Story

This week Eric Lempel, PlayStation Network's SCEA director of operations, said that there are no plans to go forward with offering on demand games in the future. Mr. Lempel blamed this on the substantial size of the games on PS3 thanks to the size capabilities of Blu-ray discs. He then went on to spout more propaganda about the wondrous glory of Sony, PS3, and Blu-ray technology.

Bullshit. First of all, outside of Metal Gear Solid 4, I can't think of any PS3 game that fully utilizes the storage capacity of the Blu-ray disc. Most come way short. Even so, with MGS4 they could download each chapter at the points that they installed the chapters regularly. Sure the downloads would take a long time, but that's due to the incompetent online architecture that is PSN, and therein lies the real problem.

If people were expected to utilize PSN more in their use of the Playstation 3 more people would come across the persistent problems that plague PSN. Inconsistent speeds, problems connecting and staying connected, far too frequent firmware updates, the length of time it takes to download and install things, and so on and so forth. More people using the service would lead to more bitching about the service. This is really why on demand games, Netflix instant streaming, and other bandwidth intensive activities are not possible right now. Sony must know the persistent problems that plague PSN, if they don't they are highly irresponsible. Almost as irresponsible is Sony not dealing with the problems and instead sweeping them under the rug and acting like they don't exist.

I really don't have a good ending for this rant. Hey look, a kittie!

Fallout 3 Point Lookout DLC Review

Like any other metropolitan area, the Salt Lake Valley has several malls. The one closest to where I live is called Valley Fair. I went out there the other day because I needed some shoes.

After weaving my way through the construction zone that is 3500 South, I entered Valley Fair parking lot and found a space quite easily. There were a smattering of cars in the lot, none bigger or better looking than my beloved Rubicon. I entered JC Penny's through the main entrance and immediately noticed how few people there were around. There were employees there, manning the tellers and arranging merchandise, but not much of anyone else. There weren't even any perverts staring at the lingerie clad mannequins.

I got my shoes, quickly I might add, then started back the way I came. That is until I felt some hunger pains and headed for the food court. When I left JC Penny's I saw more of what I had previously seen, a space with no people in it. The sound of my footsteps echoed like I was walking in an abandoned cavern, which I practically was. I saw employees, filling out Sodoku puzzles, playing handheld games, fiddling with their nails, and doing other things one does to kill time.

I got a slice of pepperoni and a Pepsi and sat down to eat it, easily finding a table. As I ate, the overwhelming thought I has was, "This place is dead." This is the same thought I had while I was playing the new Fallout 3 DLC, Point Lookout. Outside of those necessary to drive the quest forward and the one merchant on the boardwalk, there are no people in Point Lookout. Granted the Capital Wasteland wasn't brimming with people, but at least there were NPCs milling around with nothing to do in the bigger cities. The boardwalk in Point Lookout is as devoid of life as Valley Fair mall in West Valley City, neither of which are good signs for the future.
